Only those who have completed Term 1, or are current Reading Refined students should sign up for for Term 2 classes. Your child's readiness to move on to a Term 2 class will be assessed at the end of Term 1.
  • How do I sign up?
Visit our services page and select "enroll". We look forward to working with you and your child!
  • Do you do any assessments? Will you diagnose my child with dyslexia?
Live class packages include pre and post-assessments that will be written up and delivered to parents. Live class packages include one pre, and one post-treatment meeting with parents, as well as unlimited emails. Reading Refined's assessments are non-diagnostic, and do not serve as a diagnosis of dyslexia or learning disability. We are happy to furnish neuropsychologist recommendations upon request.
  • Do you only work with students who have dyslexia?
Not at all. I work with any student who has reading difficulties, from mild to severe. A diagnosis is not necessary, as reading difficulties can be the result of many other factors.
  • What is "structured literacy", and what makes it different from regular tutoring?
Structured literacy is a science-based approach originally developed by Dr. Orton and researcher Anna Gillingham to teach reading. The last four decades of scientific brain research into how children learn to read confirm that teaching the foundations of reading in a very direct and systematic way is the best way for children to learn, especially those children who have reading difficulties. The structured literacy approach teaches students the foundational skills they need to quickly and accurately decode (sound out) words which lead to more fluent reading and improved comprehension. Regular tutoring, on the other hand, is typically based on the curriculum the school is using, and involves homework help and practicing more basic skills.
  • Are online lessons as good as in-person lessons?
Yes! In fact, online lessons are better than in-person lessons for a variety of reasons. To read more about how online lessons are preferable to in-person lessons, read this blog post!
  • Why do you have a minimum requirement for sessions per week?
One of the keys to a successful reading intervention program is frequency! Seeing a specialist once a week does not provide that pace and frequency that is so important to making progress. We provide opportunities for practice between sessions to reinforce concepts, but it is important that your child work one on one with a specialist multiple times per week in order for them to learn and remember new concepts.
  • How much progress can my child make using Reading Refined services?
With structured literacy intervention, you can expect your child to make progress in the areas of phonemic awareness (the ability to distinguish and identify sounds in words), decoding (the connection between speech sounds and print letters when reading), encoding (spelling), and speed and accuracy when reading. How much progress your child will make will depend on your child's specific needs, the frequency, and duration of instruction you choose, and adherence to the program.
  • My child's teacher recommended finding an "Orton-Gillingham teacher". What does that mean?
When your child's teacher recommends an Orton-Gillingham teacher, they mean a person who has been trained and certified in the method of reading instruction developed by Dr. Orton and scientist Anna Gillingham in the early 1900s. There is sometimes a misconception that "Orton-Gillingham" is an official title or separate certification, however, it simply refers to the teaching approach also known as "structured literacy". Any person certified in structured literacy instruction by an accredited institution such as the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE), or the Academy of Orton Gillingham Practitioners (AOGP), are Orton-Gillingham teachers. Teachers who are trained in the Wilson program or Barton program are qualified to teach structured literacy, but are not considered dyslexia specialists without the additional training from one of the above accredited institutions.
  • What qualifies a person as a dyslexia specialist?
Professional certification as a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist (C-SLDS) is recognized within the teaching profession as a demonstration of the specialized knowledge required to treat people with dyslexia. Dyslexia specialists must also have one or more degrees in education, and, if they work within the school system, a teaching license.
  • What if I want to cancel my session?
We ask that you cancel sessions at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged for the session. The session rate applies to late cancelations and missed sessions. If you must cancel with less than 24 hours notice we will make every effort to schedule a make-up, but if none are available, you will still be charged for the session. Of, course, we understand that emergencies and illnesses happen, especially with kids, so we make an effort to be flexible when the inevitable occurs!
  • What will I need to participate in online lessons?
You will need a strong internet connection and a computer (iPads are not recommended). That's it! Any additional materials will be part of your Reading Kit that will be sent to you after you sign up.
